How Does Breast Development Work?

Girls get breasts during puberty. There is no fixed age at which your breasts begin to grow; in some girls the breasts are already fully grown when they are fourteen and in others only when they are eighteen. In general, the development of your breasts starts a few years before the start of your period. First the nipples grow larger and somewhat darker and then the breasts continue to grow. The nipples are a little cone-shaped at first, sometimes they keep this shape.

Breasts can be large, small, flat, full, round or almost absent. It often happens that one breast is slightly larger than the other. There are no ways to make your breasts grow faster or slower. The size of your breasts is mainly determined by heredity, but it also has to do with your body weight. Breasts consist of a large proportion of fatty tissue. So it is often the case that if you are heavier, your breasts are also larger. So breasts come in all shapes and sizes.

Not only do the breasts differ, but the nipples can also differ greatly. They can protrude, be flat or, for example, be pulled back into the chest. Nipples can become hard and tight when you are cold, but can also become stiff due to sexual arousal.

Some people think that a woman always has milk in her breasts, but that is incorrect. In milk, milk is only made when a woman has a child.

Which complaints can occur with breasts?

Almost all girls sometimes worry about their breasts. For example, they wonder if they are growing too slowly or too fast. Some girls find them too small, others too big. For example, every woman is sometimes dissatisfied with her breasts. When your breasts start to grow it can hurt. You can also get problems with your breasts before or during your period, this is because extra fluid is absorbed into the tissue. This pain is normal and will go away automatically after your menstrual period.

Your breasts change during your life. These changes can be caused by various factors such as your age, your menstrual cycle, during pregnancy, when you are breastfeeding, when you use the pill, or when you have bruises or injuries. Sometimes girls worry if they may have breast cancer because feel a lump in their chest. But breast cancer is very rare in women under the age of 30.

Nevertheless, it is good to get used to examining your breasts from puberty. This way you get to know your breasts better and you can detect changes faster. When you examine yourself you can look for nodules, leaking nipples, wrinkles around the nipples, changes in color or changes in skin structure.

When should I seek help with chest complaints?

Many girls feel insecure about (the development of) their breasts. You may also feel insecure about a number of changes in your body, for example about your hips becoming wider. Most girls compare themselves with their peers. This way you get a picture of how you are doing, for example: are your breasts larger or smaller than those of your girlfriends? You may also compare yourself to young people on television and in magazines. The result is that many girls are affected by this: they start to feel insecure because they do not have such a body or breasts.

The girls and women on television and in magazines often meet an ideal image. Most girls do not have these 'ideal sizes' and therefore feel insecure. While everyone has something beautiful and moreover people often have different ideas about what is beautiful. It is often good to talk to one or more friend (s) about your uncertainties. For example, ask them what they like about you. They probably see things about you that they like that you didn't even notice.

If you are very dissatisfied with the size of your breasts, you may consider undergoing a breast enlargement or breast reduction. An advantage of this could be that it gives you more self-confidence. Some girls suffer from their backs or shoulders because they have large and therefore heavy breasts. With the help of an operation this can possibly be remedied. Discuss with your doctor what is possible, it is possible that he will refer you to a plastic surgeon. The plastic surgeon can tell you exactly what he can do for you and what the risks are.

If you have collected enough information you can make a decision. The risks that apply to every operation, such as the chance of an infection, also apply here. The scars, on the bottom and side of the chest, will always remain visible. Only allow yourself to operate if you really want to, do not do it because your partner would prefer it.

Why Breast Augmentation?

Sometimes at first glance it is not always clear why a woman would want a breast enlargement. For many girls and women who want a breast augmentation, uncertainty about their bodies plays an important role. There are many women who think about it.

If you seriously think about a breast augmentation, it is wise to first make an appointment with your doctor. He can give you more information and possibly refer you to a plastic surgeon. The surgeon will discuss with you why you want to do the operation and see if this operation is suitable for you.

The costs of such a plastic surgery are quite high. In exceptional cases, the health insurance company will reimburse the operation.

Why breast reduction?

When you have very heavy breasts, you can be very unsure about that. You can consider breast reduction in such a case. There may also be physical reasons for breast reduction.

If you have very large breasts, you can get a lot of problems with your back or neck. It can also hurt when exercising. When you want to reduce your breasts, part of your skin, fat and mammary gland are removed. The nipple is also moved slightly during the operation.

The operation can be reimbursed by health insurance, but only if your breasts are larger than cup D or if the breasts are very uneven in size.
